Today I was in the Neurology department from 8:55 until 4:40! It was very busy and the vet tech, Jen, said she was running around like a chicken with its' head cut off. I followed Dr. Kimura into the rooms when he talked to the owners, and carried the dogs up stairs for their exams. The exam included taking the dog's paw, curling it upward, and trying to place it back on the ground. If the dog didn't straighten out its' paws then it had a neurological issue. If it was just the front two then it was in the neck area, and if it was just the back two then it affected T3 and T4! He also checked their reflexes and light response. After the exams, Dr. Kimura performed an EMG on Dakota (pictured above). In order to do an EMG, the dog must be under anesthesia because you place three needles in the muscle and measure how much movement you get. You have to be very quiet and not touch the dog during this procedure, because any sudden movements can change the results. I think after today, I have worked in every specialty at Blue Pearl.
